wHATS THE DIFFERENTS BETWEEN A GOOSNECK HITCH AND A FIFTH WHEEL?

First, let's define the type of trailers that use each type of hitch: A 5th-wheel trailer can be just like a trailer towed by the 18-wheelers, or they can be a gooseneck trailer, which is easily identified by the arching towing tongue that extends up and over the tailgate of larger pickup trucks that tow them. Gooseneck trailers are useful where a tight turning radius is needed.

True 5th-wheel trailers connect to the towing vehicle with a hardened steel pin that rides into a tapered slot and is secured by a locking lever that are part of a large tiltable 'wheel-like' assembly - hence the term "5th-wheel". It allows the tow vehicle to turn right and left and the 5th-wheel pivots horizontally to allow the tow vehicle and trailer to traverse uneven terrain.

A gooseneck trailer can have a 5th-wheel like attachment, but more often it attached to the tow vehicle using a common "ball coupler'" used on boat trailers and utility trailers (commonly called "tag-along" trailers), though the gooseneck uses a ball-coupler that is much larger in diameter and is much stronger.
