This is EXACTLY my situation.

I have a compaq v5000 notebook. It recently asked me to restart my computer to do updates. when i did, the computer kept on crashing. a blue screen kept on re-appearing. it wouldn't allow me to restart the comp in any of the safe modes either.

so i ran the recovery disc and chose the first option (recover without formatting). it showed that it was recovering XP files and what not.

So now when i logged back in after the whole process was over, i see some old installations such as firefox, malwarebytes, etc... but where are my backed up files?? i don't see my pics, word docs, etc...

please help... what do i do now? my life is shattered... i am literally in tears. please help me. i am poor college kid...

First off, Don't panic! If Malware bytes & Firefox are there, so are your files.
Comcraps are notorious for this electric easter egg hunt! I had one hide two entire cd's I had recorded in Pro Tools once. Had to use Norton Ghost to find them! I have used an external drive for my studio ever since.
I suppose I'm grabbing at darkness to ask you if you C:// drive free space got a lot larger.
If you puter dropped all the personal files, then you C:/ would show virtually empty, except for Windows & a couple of small programs. If a substancial amount of your hard drive is used, your files are still there. I'm betting they are. You might have to plug your drive into one of those external plugs to USB, & run through it with another puter that has Norton ghost on it, but you will find them.
