The Atchafalaya River might become the new outlet of the Mississippi River because:?

a. the Army Corps of Engineers wants to improve the
crawfish industry
b. this move will result in reduced wetland loss
c. because the Mississippi River delta shifts with time
and the Atchafalaya River will likely capture the
Mississippi River.
d. this would reduce the hurricane danger
e. the Ohio River Valley is a major contributor of

The answer is c. The water flows to ocean due gravity. The barriers like hills, ground uplifts delay the time for the water to reach the ocean, but water will eventually cut through to find the easiest way to it. The Atchafalaya river is capturing more water because it is the shortest distance for the Mississippi river to reach the Gulf. Even Army Corps barriers are unable to prevent it. Another cause is the uplift for northern Louisiana due plate tectonics. The river cross through couple rifts like Monroe uplift, that are still slowly pushing the ground up, which has profound effect over the time on the river. Eventually the old river channel will be cut off, and Mississippi will flow west of New Orleans.
