can a 9 speed fit through a 8 speed hub?

Hi everyone!
Is it true that you can fit a 9 speed to an 8 speed hub? i ask this because i am playing in changing disc brakes but hydraulics comes with its own pair of levers so since i am changing both calipers and if ever i thought i might as well up grade to a 9 speed. but however i don't want to spend to much money, and buy a new hub.

Yes, they are interchangeable, but now don't forget that the shifter must also be changed, the shifter MUST match the cassette. You need a 9 spd shifter to go with the 9 speed cassette.
