how do you install a single faucet shower in a ceramic tile shower which has double faucet handles?

we have a ceramic tile tub enclosur, our house built in the 70's and wish to change from two handle faucet to single. utility room on backside of shower. do we need to go through there and how do we replace holes left by two faucet?

There are a couple of ways to approach this. First, you can open an access panel behind the shower valve, remove the old valve, replace it with a new single handle valve and use an "upgrade plate" or conversion plate (try www.symmons.com, the part # is CC). option 2 is to NOT open the wall, but to get the same conversion plate, but put it over the existing valve, trace around the plate, then cut out 3/4" of an inch inside the line, remove that tile & wallboard, then replace the old valve with the new one, and install the plate to cover up the whole thing. The worst part will be cutting the tile and soldering in a very small area.
