Installing Roof Vent Fans

Next, carefully cut around your chalk outline using a utility knife. Then remove the shingles and nails from that area you just cut. Use your string and chalk again to mark the hole onto the wood of the roof once it is fully exposed. Then use the reciprocating saw to cut the hole in your roof. Pull out the shingles in the area around the hole to give way for the flashing on the roof vent fan. Pour ample amount of roofing sealant to prevent leakage around the hole where the new vent fan is located. With decking screws, secure the fan in place over the opening and screw the flashing to the roof. Then put ample amount of roof sealant around the flashing of the fan to seal the area around it. Finally, replace the shingles around the fan. Fasten the shingles as tightly as possible and put in more sealant around the diameter of the new fan. This is done to prevent the wood around the roof vent fan to rot.

If I'm installing exhaust fans in two adjacent bathrooms, can they be vented to the same roof vent?

Is there any code prohibiting this? Or do they need to each have their own separate roof vent? If this is legal, do they make Y-connectors that have a flapper that prevents backflow into the other bathroom fan when one is being used?

wow so many wrong answers !! most bath fans today already have
the "flapper" for back flow prevention already in it. you must up size the pipe
if you use two 4" vent pipes from the fan the y must be a 6x4x4 and the rest of
the venting must be done in 6" and the last 5 feet of the vent is recommended
to be insulated with r-6 pipe insulation.
