Can The Sleep Apnea Chin Strap Really Help?
The sleep apnea chin strap is a pretty simple contraption. Being little more than a fabric band that is worn like a harness over the skull and under the chin, this type of chin strap for apnea is gaining a lot of popularity, partly because it is cheap and readily available, but mainly because it offers a non invasive solution to sleep disorders for many owners.
The chin strap cradles the chin during the night, and prevents the sleeper from breathing through the mouth, ensuring that a natural nose breathing pattern occurs, The adjustable models allow you to extend the lower jaw a little to aid the preservation of a clear airway. This jaw repositioning is a very useful feature, and works in the same way that the head position that is maintained whilst in the first aid recovery position does.
It is important to speak with your health care practitioner before using, or changing over to any sleep aid. Your condition may be too severe for this type of product, and maintaining or improving your health is paramount.
That said, these types of apnea and snoring chin straps are usually able to be bought for under $20 USD, making them a very low cost part of your sleep strategy. Check out the local personal care section of a large store, or visit your pharmacy. Many of the online stores offer a really good range of sleep products, with good discounts available too.
One important thing to consider when buying a chin strap is that if you suffer from congestion or other structural problems with your nose, this may not be the snoring aid you need, Closing the mouth when you can't breathe smoothly through your nose is going to make for an uncomfortable night, and probably not a lot of sleep either.

Teens: Maybe you can help me? Any tips on how to help recovery?
I tore my posterior cruciate knee ligament yesterday playing football. The doctor strapped me up with a knee brace, and told me the general things. Keeping it up high, brace off at night, ice pack etc. I've to go back next week for more examination and for them to decide whether or not it will need surgery. Is there anything else I can do to help prevent this, or is it just down to nature? I asked this last night in both injuries and pain management but only got 1 answer between the 2 so thought I'd see if anyone here has any tips. Thanks =)
Yeah if surgery is required I will definately go through with it as I've had other ops before and I cope fine but just checking if there's any way to prevent it =)
Don't put heat on it yet. Heat will only increase the swelling. Make sure you ice it. Follow RICE. Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate. If your doctor subscribed pain meds, take them when needed and Motrin/ibuprofen to keep the swelling down. Don't walk on it even if it feels stable or like you can, don't use the crutches until your next appointment. If you have to have surgery, it's really not that bad. You go in, they put you under, open you up and give you a cadaver or your own autograph, wrap up your knee and fit you with a donjoy brace usually. After surgery just make sure to elevate, ice, keep it wrapped and do not walk on it until your doctor gives you the okay. I think the PCL is about 3-6 months in recovery time. Just work hard in physical therapy and your knee will feel the same, if not better than before.
I play soccer too, I've torn my ACL, MPFL both twice and had to have two knee surgeries on my left knee. I worked hard in PT and my left knee is better than my right knee now. As long as you stay focused and positive about it getting better, it'll work out fine. You might have to get a ligament brace for sports though. I have to wear one. It's not bad though, it's a little uncomfortable at first, but you get used to it.
Good Luck
