Shopping in Newcastle

Newcastle boasts a fantastic selection of shopping venues, from modern multi-level shopping complexes to old fashioned traditional markets, and arcades harking back to yesteryear.

Northumberland street is the main shopping street in Newcastle. Originally part of the A1 running between London and Edinburgh, it is now pedestrianised and here you can find the entrances to both the Eldon Square and Monument Mall shopping centres.
Eldon Square is the largest city centre shopping complex in the UK with over a hundred shops. In this spacious modern shopping mall you will find all the major chains such as Debenhams, John Lewis, Marks and Spencer's and the first and largest Fenwick's department store. Here you can literally "shop till you drop."

If you fancy a more traditional shopping experience the Grainger Market in the heart of Newcastle should fit the bill. Built in 1835 this Grade 1 listed building is a traditional indoor market which boasts the world's smallest Marks and Spencer's, dating back to 1895 and originally a "penny bazaar." Nowadays, while bargains are still to be had, they cost rather more than a penny! Grainger Market is a great place to be if you're shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables, and numerous butchers shops selling locally produced meat abound. Craft shops and haberdashery are also present.

Also in Newcastle city centre is the Central Arcade, as much an attraction for its architecture as its shopping. This triangular triple domed structure boasts a glass barrel-vaulted roof with Burmantofts tiles in browns, buffs and yellows. Elaborate lettering and animal heads add to the grandeur of this magnificent building. Here you can find JC Windows, one of the UK's oldest established music shops. With three floors  you can buy almost any musical instrument you can think of as well as a huge selection of sheet music, CD's and DVD's. Newcastle tourist information office is situated at the Central Arcade.

Not far from Newcastle city centre and easily accessible by shuttle bus (from Monument metro station and Central station) or main line rail from Newcastle Central station is the Metro Centre. The largest shopping centre in the EU boasting more than 330 shops over 190,000 square feet of retail floor space. Here you are sure to find something to interest you. For a respite from all that shopping take a visit to the "Qube" the brand new leisure and dining centre within the Metro Centre. The Qube has a wealth of places to eat and drink, a twelve screen cinema complex with 3D and Imax, and a ten pin bowling alley. As if all this were not enough there is even more shopping to be done at the Metro Retail Park which is adjacent to the Metro Centre and close enough to reach on foot.

Other shopping centres just outside Newcastle include The Royal Quays, situated next to the ferry terminal, which has an excellent selection of over fifty outlet shops offering big discounts, and Kingston Park which has the largest Tesco in the UK.
