do i need dot numbers for my 16000lb stepvan.?

I have a 18ft stepvan.A guy i know owns a wood trim shop,and asked me if i would be interested in hauling some ordrers to some customers around chicagoland.He said i should get about 5000 cargo insurance.Do i have to apply for my own authority,dot numbers,ect... Or can i just plate it for the 16000lbs and cargo ins.I know i need a business license.Thanks

You Need Dot # Contract carrier authority and if you truck is plated in IL you need IL intrastate authority & cargo insurance . I belive the least you can get is 25,000 its really dosnt cost alot . My $100,000 cargo policy is like $100.00 a month per truck . There is away around the contract and intrastate authority . Not for Hire carrier. you would have to be real carefull on your paper work . It would have to show that you bought the matterial from your friend and that you are transporting for your own use or if he has alot of work I might be able to lease you truck to my company using all my #s and insurance for a small % of the gross
