Two other low tech solutions involve the overall caravan security and the security of the contents within the caravan.  The next recommendation is a hitch lock.  The hitch lock can help secuity your caravan to your trailer and reduce the chance of someone un-hooking your caravan and driving off with it.

Another favorite solution is a portable caravaning alarm.  This is a cheap alternative to a hike tech solution.  This alone can be hooked up directly to your caravan and emits an ear shattering 120dB alarm upon tampering or attempted theft.  You can use this to protect the internal contents of your caravaning and secure the caravaning when you are not using your Pintle hitch lock.

Which is stronger a 5/8 in grade 8 bolt or a 5/8 hitch pin for shear forces?

Hey im gonna be hauling a trailer that weighs in at about 20,000 lbs i'm pulling it from a frame hitch and the hitch and pintle are all rated strong enough my worry is the 5/8 in pin it states its only rated to 10,000 lbs would a 5/8in grade 8 bolt be any stronger ? I had even considered drilling a second hole in the hitch to run two pins or is this crazy? I have been told that i will be fine as long as i don't snatch the trailer. I was told if it is a smooth non jerking force it would be better and less likely to break. Also i will be pulling it with a F 350 which is rated to 24,000 lbs but it is not a dually could this be a problem ? I know that dual tires would better handle to keep sway down. thanks
