Choosing the right trailer hitch for the right towing job

Yes, it is important to do some research before you invest in a trainler hitch for your rig. It is important to consider what you're driving  and what you plan to be towing before you run out and buy one! There are 5 major hitch classes made to handle most of our towing needs. ( There are also some additional ones if you plan to use a fifth wheel or gooseneck, but we'll get into that later! )

You want to always choose a hitch that is strong enough to handle the maximum weight of the trailer and what you will be hauling on it. It also has to be within the range of the vehicle you're driving ( or will be towing with ). Your car's owner's manual can give you that information regarding its max towing and tongue weight. ( The tongue weight is the actual weight put on the trailer hitch itself – for example, a Class III hitch can support up to 5,000 spread out over the length of the trailer, but only 500 pounds of that can be at the tongue – where it attaches to your vehicle ).

The class 3 hitch is probably the most common hitch, as it fits most standard or larger cars, trucks, vans, or SUVs. The 5,000 pound gross weight will cover most things you want to tow – boats, cars, motorcycles, jet skis, snowmobiles, or your lawn care equipment! It generally has a 2 inch rectangular receiver, and can be ordered to specifically fit your vehicle. This is so great anymore as the hitch manufacturers have taken all of the guess work and messing around out of it. When you get the hitch, it's made to fit your car or truck. Usually without any cutting, welding, torching, or banging!!

will this hitch fit my commander? is this all i need to put the hitch in or do i need another part?

Yes it will as the add states. Looks just like the hitch for the Grand Cherokee. You will need a wiring harness for the lights.
