Some Interesting Information About Hydraulic Cylinders
If you are crazy about giant machines doing the toughest jobs in this world, then it is also important for you to know how they work. What are the main parts that provide such kind of unmatched power to these giant machines? This article is written for those who are eager to know the principle behind the functioning of engineering vehicles and the heavy equipments. People have a misconception that these giant machines get their power due to their huge size but that's not the truth. The interesting thing is that these machines get their power due to Hydraulic Cylinders. Although the hydraulic cylinder systems will seem to be a lot complicated, the basic principle behind its function is very simple. You will come to know more about Hydraulic Cylinders later in this article.
The Fundamental Principle
The hydraulic cylinders work on the principle of pressurized fluids. In general, hydraulic cylinder will comprise of 3 main parts – a barrel in which the fluid will be filled, a piston which acts as a seal to create the required thrust by moving back and forth and a piston rod to haul out the work output of the hydraulic cylinder.
A hydraulic cylinder is based on the principle of Pascal's law which states that, "a change in the pressure of an enclosed incompressible fluid is conveyed undiminished to every part of the fluid and to the surfaces of its container." The huge force delivered by the pressurized fluid used for heavy lifting purposes. We can find them in our daily life such as cranes, hydraulic brakes, crush heavy materials, and destroy buildings. The basic function of hydraulic cylinders is same but it can be used for various purposes.
New Technological Advancements
The hydraulic cylinders form the basic building blocks of any mechanical process. With the latest technological advancements in modern mechanical engineering, the hydraulic cylinders also come with cutting edge technologies. You can find new hydraulic cylinder types such as Telescopic cylinder, Differential cylinder, Plunger cylinder, and Rephasing cylinder. Although they work on the universal principal but they offer greater flexibility in different applications.

the end of the ram of my hydraulic cylinder broke, can I weld it?
the end of the ram, where it attaches to my front-end loader broke off. Is it ok to weld it back on? Would it be strong enough?
I would say it depends on the person welding and the equipment used. If the weld can penetrate the entire thickness of the part in question, then it is a possibility.
