How do you control a stepper motor?

For my GCSE in technology, I need to use a stepper motor, I know the degrees I want, 1 degree if that is possible, but I do not know how to control it (making it move forwards, backwards, or stay in one place). Also, is it possible to control it through a PIC or PICAXE?

It stays in one place if power is applied.
To move it one direction you apply a sequence of pulses to the 4 (or 6) wires on the motor. With each sequence it moves one step. Applying the pulses in the opposite order goes the other way. Because the pulses are actually moving the motor, most microcontrollers need a driver/buffer chip to drive the motor "directly" You can also buy chips that will take a direction logic level (i.e. 0=CW, 1=CCW) and a clock logic level and produce the sequence of pulses to the motor and the drive current.
How far it moves on each step is specified when you buy it, although with trickier stepping you can half step. It will say in the specs.
