Kingdom Hearts fans have spent quality time with Sora and Roxas, now they can add three new characters to the list: Ventus, Terra and Aqua. These close friends are the main characters in the newest entry in the series, Birth by Sleep, and you play as all three of them on the way to unravel the mysteries that sheds new light on the events of the original Kingdom Hearts. But while the playable characters can be different, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep treads familiar ground. You piece together a comprehensive story with themes of friendship, light or dark, and true identity while exploring colorful Disney-themed worlds and interact with classic Disney characters. This exciting Square / Disney mixture has served the series well, which has great boss fights and flashy keyblade action. This prequel will inherit these assets, but also some of the awkwardness that has plagued previous games. The platforming is a bit clunky and the camera and lock-on system, can both lead to awkward moments. The game's structure also leads to some repetition. You explore many of the same areas, fighting many of the same enemies, and watch some of the same cutscenes three times, which can make you want Birth by Sleep featured the endless parade of cameos and Disney worlds of video games. But mechanical problems and occasionally dull page, both series fans and newcomers alike feel at home with this good, fun third-person adventure.

An opening cutscene introduces you to the birth by sleep's main three adventurers, and you must decide which you want to play as the first. Finally, repeat this step two more times and explore developing story from three angles, so you can reveal all the truth game ports. The overarching story has all the hallmarks of a brooding Square / Enix history - internal strife, strained friendships and battles between good-hearted heroes and menacing villains. In the midst of all this drama is the charming Disney vignettes to see you feel familiar stories from a unique perspective. You fight with Prince Charming, protect Snow White from attacking the devil and see the dark side of the infamous mirror, mirror on the wall, among many other scenarios. As these three characters. You witness some of the same scenes, venture down many of the same corridors (which have the same enemy attack patterns each time) and even repeat a boss battle or two with the same tactics Repetition is part of the birth of Sleep's structure, but you will ultimately far more environmentally and storytelling black.

Nevertheless there are still plenty of character-specific tasks in each of the three play-throughs. You fight (mostly) different heads and cross paths with Disney characters at different times in their own stories, occasionally meeting up with one or both of the other leading players before leaving again on your own personal journey. Time spent with Ventus, and Aqua is largely rewarding. The young and energetic Ventus is well-intentioned enough to be appealing, but not so serious as to be annoying. Aqua is thoughtful and focused, and she gives a mature counterpoint to Ven's gung-ho attitude. Both characters are voiced well, unfortunately, the same can not be said of the brooding Terra. The character struggles with the darkness in him, but the actor sending him can not express fear, excitement, sincerity, or any other feeling that the script calls. Each line is sinking like a stone, and the story suffers as a result. Terra's terrible to emit is most noticeable when he shares scenes with Disney characters, mostly because their voices are uniformly excellent and definitely comparable to the original source.

The unveiling of Ventus' helmeted opponent is a nice end to a minor mystery.

Fortunately, there was great care taken with each familiar environment. A couple of them are on the bland side, but most capture the spirit of the film that inspired them. You meet Snow White in a field drenched in sunlight; Cinderella's pumpkin carriage is as magical as you remember. Each character looks perfectly parallel to the animated forms, graced the silver screen, so you immediately understand and empathize with them. The birth of Sleep is a nice game, although the bright and attractive images come with some reservations. Most notably, the long load times are a real drag, even if you choose full installation option from the main menu. Frame rate also takes an occasional dip, usually after one of the long loading screens, although a dungeon game suffers big, nasty recession throughout. The sound is occasionally annoying (the siren that signals low health is such a nuisance), but the Kingdom Hearts and Disney fans will enjoy hearing some familiar tunes as they hop from one world to the next. It is unfortunate that some of the musical loops are so short, and repeat as often as you may never want to hear "Bibbidi-bobbidi-Boo" for the rest of your days.

Fortunately, while the match is not leaning toward the button-mashing side, it's fun, looks great, and develops in a meaningful way, as you play. Armed with a keyblade, you bash on a variety of enemies called unversed. Each character feels different, Ventus is swift with his knife, Terra takes a more deliberate approach, and Aqua are agile and acrobatic. The three main characters begins with a specific and limited selection of special abilities, but as you level up, you open up new slots for additional skills. Magic and skill level up so well and you can combine them to unlock new and more powerful movement. As you develop relationships with different characters, you earn affiliated dimension links or d-links, so you can take on the battle style and skills of other characters, including Disney heroes and villains. For standard problems, birth of sleep is not so challenging that you get very tactical advantage of often use d-links, but it is one of many ways to update the action if it begins to feel repetitive. Further energizing the struggle is different keyblade you collect, increased attack modes are called command styles and flashy special moves called shotlocks. Battles explode with color and magic and skills have you twirling around the screen, launching enemies into the air by whirlwinds and smash them with a blade on ice, among many other possibilities. Great animations and a solid sense of the effects keep the action lively and entertaining, even when more and longer sequences threatens to get boring.

Anti rails during the birth of Sleep excellent boss fights, featuring some nasty devil who wants you to look at the various Disney set pieces in a new light. On the general problems that are fighting usually not too challenging, but this game is not Cakewalk of Kingdom Hearts II. It's fun to adapt to the different patterns of bosses or perhaps switch to another set of movements that give better offensive capabilities. Bosses run visual and tactical gamut, from ground-pounding behemoths to agile swordsmen, and while a few stand out as too easy or too hard, these battles are great fun. You may run into occasional problems with the camera and lock-on systems, however. The camera can not always keep pace with the boss, you have targeted - or sometimes even standard enemies. As a result, you may lose your target lock at inopportune times or find the camera turns your character from the entire arena. And as in other Kingdom Hearts games, the camera can still be a nuisance in tighter spaces, although this minor annoyance is not likely to interfere too often.

Platforming has also been an Achilles heel for the series, and the general awkwardness of the jumping makes a few paragraphs, as Ventus' fetch quest in Cinderella's house, more annoying than noisy. Fortunately, there are few such sequences, and there is always a fun boss battle around the corner to compensate for these small offenses. There are a few other noncombat operations, the command board is the best of them. This is a surprisingly complicated board game where you can earn and improve your skills outside of combat. You can play it versus the AI or against another local player, although this is not the only way to enjoy the birth of Sleep with others. By accessing the mirage scene in single-player game, you can meet with local players in ad hoc mode and fight them in Versus mode or take on increasingly difficult waves of unversed together in Arena mode. Given that competition game is best with a full contingent of six players, it is a pity that there is no online play, although the game describes these modes as "online".

Still Birth by Sleep's multiplayer is really fun, especially cooperative arenas. Teamed with a buddy or two to take down a towering boss, especially if players are at roughly the same level, is immensely rewarding. In addition, you earn medals, which you can cash in for new talents and other goodies, including team-based skills as a group healer. You can even link the d-link with other actors, which gives you access to their features in the game. A kart racing version called Rumble Racing rounds out the multiplayer suite, but the controls and physics are so weak that it barely warrants a mention. Unfortunately it looks like a mini-game in single-player portion, though the other minigames you encounter such a sweet ice-themed rhythm game that is relatively harmless.

Like previous games in the series, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep gives good value for your money. Slashing through all three history areas may take you 25 hours or more, and command boards and additional modes gives reason to return once you have left history behind. It is unfortunate that the birth of Sleep relies so much on repetition and a few foibles from the show virtually untouched. These and a few other teams woes this PSP exclusive back from greatness, but moving pictures and smart, evolving combat probably charm fans and newcomers in forgiving most of the errors. Birth by Sleep harbors few surprises, but it is a fun and comfortable addition to a quality series.
